Building a community ready to respond
WHY Learning CPR is Important
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique used when the heart suddenly stops, a medical emergency known as sudden cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest may occur during events such as a heart attack, near drowning, or drug overdose. When the heart stops, oxygen-rich blood can no longer circulate to the brain and other vital organs. Brain injury can begin within minutes, and without intervention, death may occur within 8 to 10 minutes.
CPR helps bridge this critical gap. By manually circulating blood through the body, CPR delivers the remaining oxygen to the brain and other organs, buying time until emergency responders can restore a normal heart rhythm and provide advanced care.
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, nearly half a million Americans die from cardiac arrest each year, with more than 350,000 of those arrests occurring outside of a hospital setting—often in homes, schools, workplaces, and public spaces. In these moments, early CPR can mean the difference between life and loss.
